BURSARIES & SCHOLARSHIP

Evelyn Nicholson Leinweber

& Judy Schey Memorial Bursaries

CUSGA is pleased to offer Bursaries and a Scholarship to competitors to help them in the pursuit of their education and highland arts. 

BURSARIES

Each year CUSGA awards bursaries in memory of Evelyn Nicholson Leinweber & Judy Schey. They were fondly known as the ‘Grand Ladies of Highland Dance’, Both ladies taught at their respective schools in south Calgary. Judy was a renown choreographer and her school continues today. Evelyn was a champion dancer in her youth and she continued to teach into her senior years. They both supported the Calgary Highland Games.

Each year 4 bursaries are awarded in the following amounts:

  • $750 x 1

  • $500 x 1

  • $250 x 1

  • $100 x 1

 

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Applicants must be 18 years old or younger

  • Applicants must be a resident of Alberta

  • Applicants must compete in the 2019 Calgary Highland Games

  • Applicants must complete the application and submit an essay

 

Essay Criteria

  • 8 years old and under – your essay must be 100 words or more

  • 9 to 12 years old – your essay must be 250 words or more

  • 13 to 18 years old – your essay must be 500 words or more

  • Essay Topic for the Bursary Submissions: Please tell us what do you plan to do with the money awarded? What are your future plans within the Highland Community? How will this money help your future plans?

 

The winners will be announced at the closing ceremonies of our Games. Good luck to all those who submitted.

SCHOLARSHIP

In 2008 The Calgary United Scottish Games Association introduced the CUSGA Academic Scholarship. This scholarship is open to all post-secondary students who participate in the Highland Arts and compete at the 2019 Calgary Highland Games. We offer one scholarship of $1,000.

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Applicants must be a post-secondary student aged 18 to 25 years

  • Applicants must be registered as a full-time student for the coming year in a recognised post-secondary institution

  • Applicants must compete in the 2019 Calgary Highland Games

  • Applicants must complete the application and submit two short essays

 

Essay Topic and Criteria for the Scholarship Submissions: The essays must be  no less than 500 words each. The essays must meet the criteria listed below.

First Essay Criteria

  • An essay outlining your involvement in the Highland Arts.

  • What you plan to do with the money awarded.

  • What future plans do you have?

  • How will this money help your future plans?

 

Second Essay Criteria: Evolution of the Highland Games

  • How have the Highland Games and their events evolved over the last 106 years?

 

The winner will be announced at the closing ceremonies at our Games. Good luck to all those who submitted.
