The Calgary Highland Games Association lost a valued member in 2005, with the passing of Elizabeth (Liz) Pierce. Her tireless dedication to the Association was a vital part of the continuing success of these games for more than ten years, and her absence will be deeply felt. Liz spent endless hours of her time managing the finances of the Games Association in her role as treasurer, and all those who knew her also knew how uniquely suited for that position Liz really was. She had a well-known reputation for upholding the Scottish tradition of guarding financial assets, and would not authorize any form of transaction without an invoice. Her talent and attention to detail ensured the accurate and fair distribution of the lifeblood of the Games Association.
But Liz will be remembered mostly for her smile. Her indomitable spirit shone
through in her ability to maintain a smile in all conditions, rain or shine.
Liz could also pass that smile on effortlessly, and all who have had the privilege
of knowing her can always claim to have some small part of that gift. She would
always stand in the trailer doorway of the administration trailer, and watch
the opening ceremonies and massed pipe bands. That doorway will be conspicuously
empty at this year’s games, an absence that will be felt by all. The smile
she gave so tirelessly will be present in some small part in the knowledge that
her chair isn’t really empty, and that she’s listening to the bands
and peeking in on the dancing throughout the day. We know you’re here
Liz, but you are sorely missed.
